Androgen insensitivity (AIS)
Synonyms: AIS, complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS), partial androgen insensitivity syndrome (PAIS), minimal androgen insensitivity syndrome (MAIS)
Overview
Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is caused by androgen-receptor dysfunction in individuals with a 46,XY karyotype, producing resistance to androgen action. The resulting phenotypes span a spectrum, from typical female external genitalia to an undervirilised male to male appearance. AIS manifests as complete (CAIS), partial (PAIS), or minimal (MAIS) forms.
