PGx tebentafusp
Tebentafusp (KIMMTRAK®) is a novel immunotherapy approved for the treatment of HLA-A*02:01-positive adults with unresectable or metastatic uveal melanoma, a rare and aggressive cancer arising from melanocytes within the eye. Tebentafusp was the first therapy to demonstrate a significant overall survival benefit in metastatic uveal melanoma and represents an important advance in precision oncology.
Unlike many cancer therapies that are selected based on tumor mutations, tebentafusp requires the presence of a specific HLA type. Only patients who carry HLA-A*02:01 are eligible for treatment because the drug’s mechanism of action depends on this HLA molecule.
As a result, HLA-A02:01 testing is mandatory before treatment initiation. Patients who do not carry HLA-A02:01 are not expected to benefit from tebentafusp.
