Overview
Focal epilepsy is characterised by recurrent unprovoked seizures arising from neuronal networks within one cerebral hemisphere. Seizures are classified according to awareness and motor or non-motor onset and may evolve into focal-to-bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. Genetic forms range from non-syndromic familial focal epilepsies with otherwise normal neurological and cognitive development to syndromic epilepsies associated with cortical malformations or broader neurodevelopmental disorders.
