Overview
Congenital lactase deficiency is caused by deficient intestinal lactase-phlorizin hydrolase activity, leading to severe neonatal osmotic diarrhoea on first exposure to lactose-containing milk. The disorder is lifelong but responds fully to strict avoidance of dietary lactose.
