Overview
Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the small intestine triggered by dietary gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. It leads to intestinal inflammation, villous atrophy, and impaired nutrient absorption. A key prerequisite for disease development is the presence of specific HLA class II alleles, making celiac disease one of the strongest HLA-associated conditions known.
