Ciliopathies
Cilia are essential cellular organelles that function, for example in the kidney, as mechano-, chemo- and osmosensors. They play a crucial role in numerous signalling pathways that are required for normal organ development, maintenance of tissue homeostasis, and fundamental developmental processes. Ciliary structure and function depend on many proteins and thus multiple genes, which explains the marked clinical and genetic heterogeneity of ciliopathies. Molecular genetic analysis using next-generation sequencing (NGS) can facilitate accurate diagnostic classification.
