Early repolarisation syndrome
Early repolarisation syndrome (ERS) is an ECG abnormality characterised by a J wave occurring immediately after the QRS complex, particularly in inferolateral leads. While the pattern is often considered harmless in healthy young people and athletes, it can be associated with severe cardiac arrhythmias and an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Genetic factors play a role, with studies showing familial clustering and associations with gene variants, particularly in the SCN5A gene, which can slow cardiac conduction and increase the risk of malignant arrhythmias.
