Overview

Congenital heart defects occur in approximately eight out of every 1,000 live births and are a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although the causes are multifactorial, many of these heart defects are believed to be genetic in origin. More than 100 genes encoding various factors and signal transduction pathways have been linked to congenital heart defects. Using new sequencing technologies, genetic causes of different heart defects, both isolated and syndromic forms, can be identified.
